The major unions representing workers at CBC/Radio-Canada – CMG, SCRC and AR – have written to Prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau urging him to act quickly on the commitment to reverse the $115-million funding cut imposed by Stephen Harper and his Conservative government and to reinvest in CBC/Radio-Canada. They also ask that Division 17 of Bill C-60 which allows political interference in CBC/Radio-Canada’s day-to-day operations be repealed immediately.
The unions have asked to meet with the new government as soon as possible to help start the process of putting in place a non-partisan mechanism for appointing CBC/Radio-Canada’s CEO and Board of Directors.
In addition, the unions are asking the two other national parties – the NDP and the Green Party – to continue championing a strong, independent national public broadcaster.
