Rumour(s) of the day

The federal government has made no secret of the fact that CBC is slated for a cut in the coming budget. Any cut to the CBC will certainly affect programming and staffing. However, until that budget is unveiled – likely in March – no one outside the Prime Minister’s entourage will know what it contains.

CBC management has told staff and their unions that it is developing post-budget scenarios and working to maintain the priorities in the 2015 strategic plan. CMG and other unions receive regular high-level briefings and have an opportunity to share ideas with top management. However, we are not privy to the information CBC has shared with the government in advance of the budget.

In the meantime, we have been advised of some redundancy notices and layoffs. We understand these are the result of priority shifts and are not connected to the federal budget. We are working with the affected members to ensure their rights under the collective agreement are respected.

The Guild has *not* been advised of major layoffs and we don’t expect such an announcement unless and until the federal budget makes them necessary.

We know these are uncertain and stressful times. The Guild is committed to keeping you as up to date as possible. And while there have been attacks on the CBC, we can be heartened by the support Canadians continue to show for public broadcasting.
