The Canadian Media Guild got notice this morning that three permanent employees and nine contract employees were to be given notice today that their jobs have been made redundant. The employees work on The X, a children’s television program.
“This is unacceptable,” declared Dan Oldfield, senior staff representative with the Guild. “Our collective agreement calls on management to notify the union 8 weeks before declaring redundancies ? and before notifying affected employees ? so that the parties can meet and see about finding the employees alternate work at the Corporation.”
The Guild is trying to make improvements to severance notice during the current round of bargaining so that we can do more for members whose careers and livelihoods are at risk. In today’s case, we will seek a remedy because provisions already in the agreement were not respected.
