CBC management denies vacancies to HR employees facing layoff

Seven employees in Human Resources in Toronto were told Thursday that their positions are redundant due to the implementation of the new timecard system. Unfortunately, CBC management has informed the Guild that no vacancies are available for the affected employees.

Instead, CBC management has been posting the vast majority of vacancies as “contract jobs” and is taking the position that these jobs are not available to employees facing layoff. As a result, the Corporation is forcing a situation where the affected employees will have to bump more junior employees.

In the past, the union and management have tried to work together to avoid bumping, which is often possible by placing people whose jobs have been made redundant into vacancies. The Guild is concerned about the apparent change in CBC management’s approach on this issue.

The Guild has filed a grievance and is seeking to have the matter heard quickly. The jobs of the seven affected employees will be eliminated on October 26.
