CBC must provide documents related to communications outsourcing

An arbitrator has ordered CBC management to produce documents related to the decision to contract out the work of the publicity department to Media Profile in 2005, resulting in the layoffs affecting 34 Guild members.

The CBC must allow the Canadian Media Guild to view the contract between the CBC and Media Profile and must also produce any and all documents “created by or for CBC management relating to the reorganization of the Communications Department, including any alternatives to contracting out the work.”

“This is an important ruling because it means all of the facts will be available to determine whether CBC had a valid business case when it decided to outsource the publicity work,” says CMG national president Lise Lareau. “We have argued from the beginning that it was a bad decision because it would mean paying more for less publicity for CBC programming. We believe the documents will prove it.”

The arbitration on the outsourcing is continuing.
