CMG is concerned about further media concentration in Canada with Corus’ announcement that it is buying Shaw Media.
Today’s announcement means that Canada’s media will be even more concentrated in fewer hands as large Corporations continue to monopolize the industry.
CMG will be seeking a meeting with Shaw Media to discuss what this deal means for CMG members working at Shaw, and possible impact on all jobs. We will update our members as information becomes available.
“Canada has one of the most highly concentrated media in the world, and today’s announcement intensifies the problem, says Carmel Smyth, National President for the Canadian Media Guild. “This trend toward fewer owners will negatively impact the industry and the diversity of voices available to Canadians. ”
This transaction comes at a crucial time as the CRTC planned Let’s-Talk-TV changes come into effect – A recent study predicts the changes could cause a loss of 15 000 jobs.
“We urge the CRTC to give careful consideration to any changes that impact Canada’s media landscape,” Smyth said.
