With a representation vote held earlier this week, on Tuesday and Wednesday, Corus employees in Engineering, Master Control, and Media Processing at Corus Quay in Toronto have decided to dissolve their collective bargaining unit.

A first collective agreement was ratified earlier this year by the same group of workers – with over 95 per cent of bargaining unit members voting in favour of the agreement at that time. That agreement and that unity held a great deal of promise.

To those who know the value of forming a union and the importance of securing a collective agreement, this decision to now dissolve the bargaining unit is understandably a disappointing development. Unfortunately, the terms of the collective agreement are now no longer enforceable via our union.

It takes courage and mutual commitment to improve a workplace – on behalf of ourselves, our co-workers and, ultimately, a broader community of working people – and that cannot be taken away, whether we are union members or not.
