The hearing for the arbitration on allowances paid to Unit 2 employees working the Athens Olympics concluded last Thursday. The Canadian Media Guild expects a decision from Arbitrator Chapman by the end of May.
The arbitrator is to decide whether CBC can pay less than the Treasury Board’s approved rate for special events such as the Olympics. If she rules that the CBC can pay less, she will then hear testimony on whether the allowances paid were adequate to cover employees’ expenses. However, if she rules in the Guild’s favour, the arbitration is over.
A Unit 1 grievance on the same issue has been held in abeyance until a decision is handed down on the Unit 2 grievance.
