CMG calls for better local, news programming at MBS Radio in Saint John

The Canadian Media Guild (CMG) has filed a submission with the CRTC, urging the Commission to require Halifax-based MBS Radio improve local programming, including news programming, in Saint John as a condition for renewing its licences for Big John and CFBC.

“Our members have serious concerns about MBS Radio’s commitment to the community of Saint John,” says Gary Stackhouse, president of the Guild at MBS Radio in Saint John. “As we’ve said from the beginning, our fight on the picket line is really about the survival of local radio, and serving the interests of our community on public airwaves.”

CMG is asking for the following commitments to the community from MBS:

– Establish newsgathering resources in Saint John

– Improve local programming to reflect the local community and enhance the diversity of editorial voices

– Improve the quality of local programming to serve the interests of the community

CMG hopes the CRTC will focus on these issues in the licence renewal proceeding.
