We received notice today that The Canadian Press has applied to the federal Ministry of Labour for a conciliator. This starts the clock ticking toward a potential work stoppage.
“It’s unfortunate that the two sides haven’t had the time to have meaningful discussions about our respective positions before the employer took this step,” says CP branch president Terry Pedwell. “That said, we’re ready to talk anytime.”
Under the Canada Labour Code, no work stoppage could happen for at least three months. We will do everything in our power to get a fair deal. We’ve told the employer that their position is unrealistic for our members and for the survival of the company.
The two sides will meet next week, and we expect to exchange some further proposals. We will be in touch with local Guild leaders to discuss our next steps.
As always, we appreciate your support and welcome your questions and comments.
