CBC/Radio-Canada Toronto Chief Steward Election – Candidate’s Profile: Sheena Goodyear

My name is Sheena, and I believe stewards are the lifeblood of a union. That’s why I’m running for the position of chief steward.

Stewards work side-by-side with you at CBC, ready to find answers to your questions, help you navigate tricky situations, stand up for your rights and connect you with union representatives. For the last year, I have been a proud steward, and if you elect me, I will work to grow our ranks and strengthen our network.

I believe the best way to keep people informed and engaged is to have stewards on every floor, in every department and on every team. People who are looking out for you. People who can remind you that your union is not some distant third party – it’s you and your fellow workers.

I will work with my colleagues to recruit and train new stewards, and keep them connected. I know there are so many of you out there who are already doing this work, even if you don’t have a name for it.

I’ve worked at CBC for almost a decade, first as a temp in news before finding a home as digital producer at CBC Radio’s As It Happens. In that time, I have strived to be someone who lifts people up and opens doors. As a trainer with the Learning & Development department, I aim to make my colleagues feel excited and empowered in their work. As a member of the grassroots Temp Collective, I fight for stronger protections for casual workers. And as a mentor with CBC’s Temp Project, I try to help our most precarious members navigate life at the CBC.

I love the public broadcaster and I believe in its mission. But this is not an easy place to work, and certainly not always kind. Now more than ever, we need to have each other’s backs.

In solidarity,

Sheena Goodyear
