Guild seeks election volunteers

Interested in having a role in your union that is interesting, challenging and vital to maintaining our democratic traditions?

The Canadian Media Guild is looking for three people to oversee its national elections. According to the Guild’s bylaws, the Election Committee must “establish and publish procedures for national elections to ensure that members are well informed and campaigns are equitable.”

The Election Committee serves for the term of a National Executive, i.e. three years, but members may be reappointed by the next executive. The committee is supported in its work by CMG staff.

Committee members will be expected to attend meetings in the next few weeks to oversee the phone vote to elect CMG delegates to meetings of our parent unions. That vote is scheduled for April 11-13.

From time to time during the next three years, there may be special votes or byelections that will require the attention of the Election Committee. The committee also will be responsible for the election of National and Branch officers to take place in three years.

It is expected the committee also will be involved in developing ongoing policy in conjunction with the National Executive Committee.

Any Guild member from any branch of the union may put their name forward. To avoid any conflict of interest, ideal candidates for the Election Committee are individuals who do not intend to run for office in the next three years.

If you’re interested, please let me know at the e-mail address below by March 17. The National Executive Committee will appoint the committee as soon as possible after that date.
