The Canadian Media Guild celebrates Aboriginal History Month and acknowledges all of our members of indigenous descent.
We have people working at bureaus and workplaces all across the country that are representative of the vast diversity of indigenous people from coast to coast to coast.
We are especially proud of our members working at APTN who bring the stories of our nations to all Canadians. We also congratulate all of our members, past and present, whose voices have made the CBC particularly vibrant.
We also acknowledge our members working at all locations with First Nations, Inuit, and Metis heritage, knowing that we are truly stronger together.
Canada’s living heritage includes the beautiful diversity of over sixty indigenous nations which remain strong and vitally alive.
These nations and communities are enriching the vast tapestry of our land by revitalizing their customs, languages, and ceremonies.
The Canadian Media Guild asks our members to celebrate this rich history and diversity.
If you haven’t already done so, learn about the indigenous nation that has resided in your region for thousands of years before Contact; learn something of their history and their culture.
For those who are more adventurous, learn how to say a nation’s name in their own language. For example, the Ojibwe refer to themselves as the Anishnaabe, the Iroquois are the Haudenosaunee and the Cree are the Nehiyaw.
Learn about the different settlements of Metis people, and also the amazing story of Inuit communities surviving in one of the harshest climates in the world.
Consider ways in which both these histories and present day examples of vitality might be shared with even wider audiences.
We will all be richer for it. Stronger together.
