2023 CMG Convention – Call for delegates and Resolutions

The CMG 2023 biennial convention will be held in Toronto June 9-10, at the Chelsea Hotel, Toronto, with a Branch-specific day scheduled for June 8.

Every two years, about 200 Canadian Media Guild (CMG) members from across the country get together to review CMG priorities, see what we can do better, and set our union’s direction for the next two years.

The Canadian Media Guild has 5,000 members across the country, in more than a dozen media companies. Members selected as delegates from APTN, BuzzFeed, The Canadian Press/PMNA, CBC/Radio-Canada, Islington Printing, Thomson Reuters, TFO, TVO, Vice and ZoomerMedia, will have a chance to meet each other and help plan the union’s future priorities.

A big thank you to each and everyone of you who took the time to answer our union’s recent survey. The top priorities identified by the 320 members who responded to the survey are: Bargaining, Salaries and Working conditions as the number one priority, followed by Temporary work in second place, and Telework as the third most important issue for CMG members.

We’ve also read all your other survey responses and thoughtful comments, and it’s your input that has informed the theme of our 2023 CMG Convention: “Building the future of media, together” to reflect the urgency for us as media workers and as journalists, to take an active part in shaping the future of our work – both for ourselves as workers, and for the critical role we must continue to play in delivering quality news and reliable information to the public.

Here is key information for CMG members as we prepare for our convention:

Delegates to the CMG convention

Automatic delegates

Members of Branch executives and Location Unit presidents are all automatic delegates to the convention, along with the CMG National Executive Committee members. Other interested CMG members who would like to attend as delegates can put their name forward in their Location Units, or in their Branches where there are no Location Units.

Additional delegates

The number of additional delegates for each Branch or Location Unit is determined by a formula based on membership. The additional delegate allocations for the 2023 Convention are available here

To be a candidate in the delegate elections, please submit your name to your Location Unit or Branch executives by Friday, March 17 at 5 p.m. EST.

To find your Location Unit or Branch executive contact information, go to www.cmg.ca (Contacts).

Each Location Unit or Branch may also use their Location or Branch budget to send additional non-voting delegates (observers). Check with a member of the CMG executive at your workplace if you would like to attend as an observer.

The union will pay for the workdays that delegates are released to attend the convention as well as all their expenses. Delegates will receive instructions on completing travel and release forms once the selection process has been completed.
