Every individual deserves a safe working environment, a principle that extends to journalists covering press conferences or scrums.

Regrettably, in a recent press conference, a Canadian political leader misused their authority, targeting one of our members—a reporter diligently performing their duties.

It’s crucial to recognize that publishing corrections signifies the media’s commitment to integrity. Journalistic credibility lies in the courage to acknowledge mistakes, rectify information, and uphold transparency.

Increasingly, media professionals face attacks, bullying, harassment, and, in some cases, even fatal incidents, all for the simple act of reporting on events firsthand to shed light on regional, national, and international events.

The indispensable work of media professionals prevents the spread of misinformation and disinformation. 

As a union representing media professionals across Canada, we vehemently condemn this inappropriate behavior by a politician who should know better. We call on all political leaders to denounce the bullying of media professionals and to urge their followers to do the same.
