The Canadian Media Guild is a democratic trade union that is comprised of over 5000 members, including employees at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation / Société Radio-Canada, The Canadian Press and Pagemasters North America, Thomson Reuters, the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, TVO, TFO, VICE, ZoomerMedia, AFP, private radio, as well as media freelancers.
The Canadian Media Guild (CMG) is seeking an Associate Union Representative (Associate Staff Representative) who will be based in Toronto and serve CMG members across the country.
The Associate Staff Representative will handle preliminary queries from CMG members concerning workplace issues.
Record keeping is an important part of the job. If a query is referred, the Associate Staff Representative starts a file on the case and ensures it is maintained.
We anticipate the successful candidate will develop and advance within the organization.
Major duties and responsibilities:
Handle preliminary queries from CMG members concerning workplace issues. Respond to member queries via telephone and email.
Answer straightforward queries about collective agreement language and provide other basic workplace information and advice.
Determine whether an issue should be referred to someone else.
Be pro-active in ensuring the case continues to be handled at the appropriate level and providing feedback to members on the status of their case.
Review ongoing cases to ensure they are being handled and troubleshoot when necessary.
Maintain a central file system of cases, and prepare reports on ongoing cases for CMG leadership or representatives, when requested
Complete all related administrative tasks including the drafting of letters and email correspondence, completing reports, participating in conference calls, and attending all required meeting
Help organize general membership meetings, steward meetings, and arrange on-site location unit visits. Assist in organizing and mobilization efforts, as required.
Qualifications:
Experience providing effective support and guidance to union members and elected union member-representatives
General experience as a union activist and knowledge of contract language and how it works
Knowledge of the protocols and legislation that govern employer/employee relations
Knowledge of trade unionism, the Canada Labour Code, and collective bargaining
Knowledge of CMG collective agreements would be an asset
A high degree of initiative, tact, and good judgment
An ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with others and cope well with stress
A high degree of competency using computer software tools such as Word and Excel
Ability to communicate via teleconference and video conferencing tools with a high degree of comfort
Strong knowledge of the Canadian media industry is an asset
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
French language proficiency, both written and verbal, is an asset
Compensation:
Wages and benefits are set according to the provisions of the CMG – Canadian Media Guild Employees Union (CMGEU) collective agreement (available online).
Salary ranges from approximately $65,000 to $74,000 with additional pay (20%) in lieu of pension and benefits.
If the position is designated bilingual, additional pay will recognize French language proficiency.
