The CBC has agreed to the Canadian Media Guild’s request to delay the decision to stop reimbursing parking expenses for those employees who have to travel to or from work during hours when public transit isn’t available. The reimbursement will stop as of the end of the fiscal year on March 31 instead of early February as had previously been announced. The Guild had requested the delay to allow more time for further discussions on the issue.
The collective agreement provides only for reimbursement of taxi expenses, but not parking expenses, and even then only to a maximum of $12.50 per trip. Some departments had established a practice of reimbursing parking expenses instead. This practice was most prevalent in Toronto, where the nearest 24-hour public transit stop is six blocks away.
The Guild will continue its efforts to persuade the CBC to reconsider its decision, in the interest of protecting employees who have to work late hours.
