After decades as a journalist, and then Atlantic Staff Representative for the CMG, Gerry Whelan will retire December 31, 2014.

Gerry began his career in private broadcasting in Newfoundland and Labrador, then worked as a freelance journalist at CBC Corner Brook and at CBC Sydney. While he stayed less than two years, his friendships with the Capers remain forever. By 1980, Gerry was on his way to CBC Halifax and two decades of journalism as Host of Land and Sea, and then with Radio Noon, and News and Current Affairs.

During this time, he was involved in the union as local president in Halifax, and led organizing campaigns for the newsroom at the Chronicle Herald and the Daily News Backshop.

Shortly after becoming Atlantic Staff Rep for the Guild in 1999, he continued organizing drives including at the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and other campaigns across the country. Gerry believes the job gave him back every day the chance to help Guild members and was the most rewarding part of his 15 years. “I’ve had the best working years of my life, and was blessed to be able to represent the best workers in this country,” Gerry says.

Gerry will be missed, especially for his sense of humour and quick wit. Long-time CMG staff Rep Gabi Durocher (Gabi@cmg.ca) will take on Gerry’s duties serving the Eastern region as of January 1, 2015.
