The Canadian Media Guild has filed a submission to the CRTC as part of the regulator’s consultation about the future of television in Canada.
Here are our key recommendations in the submission:
-That the CRTC strengthen public service media within the Canadian television ecosystem in the public interest and to ensure diversity. We also urged the Commission to clarify prior to the September hearing, the terms of discussion should CBC come up during this proceeding.
-Given the importance of local programming to Canadians and to the media system, we renew our recommendation that the CRTC establish a Fund accessible to public service media, including CBC, provincial public broadcasters, community and independent broadcasters across all platforms.
-We also renew our recommendation made last year that the Commission, in the public interest, require all-news channels to build newsgathering capabilities including bureaus across the country and a standard journalistic code of ethics, in order to meet the needs and expectations of Canadians for accurate information.
CMG also addressed issues surrounding unscripted television, transmitters and the proposed “pick-and-pay” approach, in response to the CRTC’s questions
