Calgary-based Shaw Communications and Canwest Global Communications have announced a deal which would see Shaw take control of Global TV as well as Canwest’s other broadcast assets, including the specialty channels of CW Television Inc. The newspaper assets, such as the National Post and the Ottawa Citizen, are being sold separately.
Details are scarce for the moment, mainly because the deal still has to be approved by the CRTC as well as the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, which is supervising Canwest’s restructuring. The Guild has been in touch with CW management, who have committed to sharing as much information as they can once the deal is closer to completion
According to initial reports, the Canwest assets won’t be merged with Shaw’s existing cable or broadcasting companies, and the group of specialty channels currently under the CW Television Inc umbrella is being kept as a unit.
We will continue to press management for information and commitments as details come available. Stay tuned.
