Guild and Shaw Media continue to bargain new agreement, discuss layoffs

The Guild at Shaw has filed two grievances related to the layoffs announced in April. Both relate to the fact that members’ seniority rights are not being respected in the process. The Guild is very concerned about how the recent layoffs were implemented and will meet with management next week to try to resolve the issues.

With a view to avoiding similar problems in the future, last week the Guild Bargaining Committee also proposed new contract language on layoffs. The changes would require the company to meet with the union to discuss any overall cutback plan and allow volunteers to come forward who may be looking to leave anyway before layoff notices go to any member. The new language would also tighten seniority provisions and allow people on layoff to collect part of their severance while staying on the recall list. Right now, members must choose whether to stay on recall and wait to collect severance if they are not recalled, or collect severance right away and give up recall rights.

The Guild and Shaw Media management remain quite far apart in salary discussions at the table. We will meet again on Tuesday to try to find a compromise that works for both sides.

We will keep you updated with any developments. In the meantime – as always – if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to get in touch with a member of the executive or the bargaining committee. You can also write to CMG Staff Rep Terri Monture (terri@cmg.ca ).
