The Canadian Media Guild, the biggest union at CBC/Radio-Canada, will request a meeting with newly-named CBC president Hubert Lacroix as soon as possible after he assumes the role in the new year.
“We know little about Mr. Lacroix, except that he’s said to be a good corporate lawyer,” says Lise Lareau, president of the CMG. “We would welcome the opportunity to get to know him better and to share with him our views about the future of the public broadcaster.”
The CMG called for a revitalization of CBC/Radio-Canada, starting with a ten-year parliamentary mandate, increased public funding and improved governance, in (a submission earlier this year to the parliamentary Heritage Committee entitled “A cry for help”.
“CBC needs a strong advocate at the top,” adds Lareau. “We really hope that Mr. Lacroix values what our members do every day and is excited enough about our work to champion it across the country.”
