Martin O’Hanlon leads Guild parent union in Canada

Martin O’Hanlon was sworn in on August 23 as the new director of CWA/SCA Canada, the CMG’s parent union in Canada. Martin, a member of the CMG and parliamentary editor for The Canadian Press in Ottawa, was elected after a mail-in ballot earlier this summer. The other candidate for the position was Ron Carroll, vice president of the Montreal Newspaper Guild.

?I’d like to thank all the members who participated in the election,? Martin says. ?I am looking forward to working with everyone to make this the most progressive and dynamic union in Canada.

“I’d also like to pay special tribute to Arnold Amber, who steps down after 16 years at the helm of the union. Arnold has been a strong and visionary leader who built CWA/SCA Canada into what it is today. Thank you for all you’ve done, Arnold, and we look forward to your ongoing advice.”

Lois Kirkup of the Ottawa Newspaper Guild was acclaimed as deputy director, the position Martin held previously.

Martin is taking a leave from The Canadian Press to take on the full-time director job at CWA/SCA Canada beginning on August 30. You can reach him at mohanlon@cwa-scacanada.ca or by calling 613-820-9777 or, toll-free, 1-877-486-4292.
