The Canadian Media Guild honours and commemorates workers who have suffered work-related disability, disease, and death.
On Sunday, April 28, 2024, the National Day of Mourning, The Canadian Media Guild (CMG) commemorates media workers who have suffered work-related disability, disease, and death. Media workers relentlessly pursue truth and venture into conflict zones to provide unbiased and objective news to the global community. This coverage goes beyond public awareness, it can impact the world’s response. We express profound sorrow and extend heartfelt condolences to the families and colleagues of journalists and media workers who have tragically lost their lives in recent and ongoing conflicts.
The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) hopes that the annual observance of the National Day of Mourning will help strengthen the resolve to establish safe and healthy conditions in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses, and deaths.
The Canadian Media Guild (CMG), representing 6000 Canadian media workers nationwide, urges governments and employers to recognize media workers’ pivotal contributions to society and prioritize their physical and mental safety, especially in conflict zones. We also implore and remind our journalists and media professionals working to cover these difficult and emotional stories in newsrooms across Canada and the world to hold space for each other’s perspectives and views.
As much as this is a day to remember those who have lost their lives, it is also a call to protect the living and make work a place where people are safe and can thrive.
