As you’re preparing your tax return for 2010, remember that union dues are deductible from your taxable income. Check the amounts on your tax information slip or slips and enter the total on your tax return.

This is also a good time to double-check that you haven’t paid too much in dues. The Canadian Media Guild withholds dues at the rate of 1.55% of earnings, up to an annual maximum. For 2010, that maximum was $1,600. (Note that the maximum is $1,700 in 2011.) Sometimes we discover that employers haven’t applied the cap. If you paid more than $1,600 in CMG dues in 2010, please contact your employer as well as the Guild office so that the excess can be returned to you.
