Every year a labour sponsored award celebrates investigative journalism that exposes a wrong (Diana Swain, Timothy Sawa and Angela Gilbert’s the fifth estate story on sexual abuse in 2012), or social injustice (proving the link between poverty and poor health in 2011– Hamilton Spectator’s Steve Buist).
Last year two Ottawa citizen reporters won for breaking the story on robocalls and election fraud. This year all eyes are on Alberta, Quebec and B.-C.
At a time when quality, long-form journalism is increasingly difficult to make as cutbacks threaten the ability of every news team to do innovative, time-intensive work, we salute the Hillman Awards Canada for recognizing and rewarding stories that make Canada a better place.
This year, help celebrate our talented journalists on Tuesday, March 18 at the Drake hotel. (RSVP at Courtney@HillmanFoundation.org)
