We are saddened by the tragic events in Virginia, and the shocking killing of two news staff.
We know journalism has become one of the most dangerous occupations globally with over 70 media workers targeted and killed since the beginning of this year, in and outside of war zones, simply for doing their jobs.
As a union we regularly fight occupational health and safety issues (debilitating shifts, physical injuries, mental health accommodations) and other risks inherent to a high stress occupation.
How tragic today that this senseless killing takes the lives of two young colleagues, and makes our jobs seem even more hazardous and uncertain.
Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones.
