CIRB to clarify issue of representation vote at Alliance Atlantis

The Canada Industrial Relations Board has agreed it makes sense to clear up issues around the possible vote on union certification at Alliance Atlantis before dealing with other matters. On October 11, the board thus adjourned a hearing into unfair labour practice complaints with the consent of the union and the employer.

It was felt there was no point dealing with the complaints until the board deals with the Guild’s request to review its decision to call for a representation vote.

As of Tuesday, the panel that made the decision to order a vote still had not supplied reasons. The Guild has filed for another look at that decision since, absent good reasons for a vote, CMG believes federal law is clear and a majority of cards means automatic certification.

It is hoped that review of the vote decision will take place quickly, possibly this week, so that the employees of Alliance Atlantis, the union and the employer can all move on to the next phase.
