Of the 657 affected positions across the country, approximately 200 are located in Toronto. Employees in the affected positions are receiving a notice of redundancy, being re-assigned, retiring or, in the case of contract employees, having their contract “non-renewed”.

The LJEC is currently dealing with over 80 members who have received redundancy notices. We are looking for other positions to place these people in, following the workforce adjustment process that is set out in article 46 of our collective agreement .

Because of the number of affected positions, the Canada Labour Code requires the CBC to provide at least 16 weeks notice. This notice was given on April 11; therefore the earliest any layoff can occur is August 1. Between now and then the LJEC will continue to try to find placements, either permanent or temporary, for employees whose position is disappearing.

Later on in the process, some employees will begin to receive layoff notices. Please note that an employee who is being laid off will receive no less than four weeks notice before their employment is terminated.

We understand that these cuts are creating some uncertainty, and we’re doing our best to try to minimize that.
