In her announcement today, the Minister acknowledged that, \u201cNever before has a public broadcaster been so needed, so vital, to so many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She committed to \u201cstrengthen[ing] the mandate of our public broadcaster \u201d and noted that, \u201cThe CBC carries a huge public responsibility. Canadians\u2019 expectations for it are fiercely high. They ought to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CMG welcomes this commitment to strengthen and rebuild the national public broadcaster.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to the announced mandate review, we will be following developments closely and look forward to participating. For this review to be meaningful, a broad range of stakeholders and supporters of CBC\/Radio-Canada need to be engaged and involved.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to reopening the Broadcasting Act, our union believes key components of the Act need to be secured including those pertaining to: the special role of CBC\/Radio-Canada; the protection CBC\/Radio-Canada\u2019s independence; support for Canadian content; mandatory carriage of Indigenous and community media; the value of local news as a vital public service; quality jobs for media and cultural workers.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, Canada\u2019s cultural policies must always emphasize quality jobs as part of healthy creative industries. In order to perform at our best, media workers and our fellow creative workers of all ages, experience levels, and backgrounds require good working conditions as well as stable and secure employment.<\/p>\n<p>We are heartened that as part of her announcement today, the Minister reiterated her government\u2019s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission\u2019s (TRC) Calls to Action. Our union would like to draw special attention to the TRC recommendations on Media and Reconciliation, as well as Language Preservation.\u00a0 In that regard, we agree that the national public broadcaster, CBC\/Radio-Canada, and the leading global Indigenous broadcaster, APTN, must be strengthened.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, as media workers, we value of adequate and proper funding for local news and information programming in the public interest.\u00a0 Because quality journalism plays an important role in supporting democracy and maintaining a diversity of editorial voices across communities, viable and sustainable funding options should be explored.<\/p>\n<p>For more detail, please see\u00a0<a title=\"This external link will open in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cmg.ca\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Final-CMG-Canadian-Media-and-a-Changing-Industry-Sept-2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">CMG\u2019s Principles and Objectives &#8211; Canadian Media in a Changing Industry\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kamala Rao<br \/>\nPresident, Canadian Media Guild<br \/>\nJonathan Spence<br \/>\nCBC\/Radio-Canada Branch President, Canadian Media Guild<\/p>\n<p>***<br \/>\nLe 28 septembre 2017<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>La Guilde encourag\u00e9e par la vision du gouvernement Trudeau pour Radio-Canada\/CBC<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>La Guilde canadienne des m\u00e9dias (GCM) est encourag\u00e9e de voir la Ministre du Patrimoine M\u00e9lanie Joly reconna\u00eetre le r\u00f4le fondamental et central que joue CBC\/Radio-Canada au sein du syst\u00e8me m\u00e9diatique et culturel du pays. En effet, dans sa vision annonc\u00e9e aujourd\u2019hui, la ministre a reconnu que \u00ab Jamais un radiodiffuseur public n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 si n\u00e9cessaire, si important pour les Canadiens. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Elle s\u2019est engag\u00e9e \u00e0 \u00ab consolider le mandat de notre radiodiffuseur public \u00bb, soulignant que \u00ab Notre radiodiffuseur public a une responsabilit\u00e9 fondamentale. Les attentes des Canadiens sont extr\u00eamement \u00e9lev\u00e9es. Elles doivent l\u2019\u00eatre. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>La Guilde appr\u00e9cie cet engagement de renforcer et de reb\u00e2tir le diffuseur public national.<\/p>\n<p>En ce qui a trait \u00e0 l\u2019examen du mandat, nous suivrons de pr\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e9volution de la situation et avons h\u00e2te de participer. Pour que cet examen soit fructueux, il faudra assurer la participation d\u2019une vaste gamme d\u2019intervenants et de membres du public qui soutiennent Radio-Canada\/CBC.<\/p>\n<p>Concernant la r\u00e9ouverture de la Loi sur la radiodiffusion, notre syndicat estime que des \u00e9l\u00e9ments cl\u00e9s de la Loi doivent \u00eatre maintenus, dont le r\u00f4le sp\u00e9cial de Radio-Canada\/CBC; la protection de l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance de Radio-Canada\/CBC; l\u2019appui au contenu canadien; la distribution obligatoire des m\u00e9dias Autochtones et communautaires; l\u2019importance des nouvelles locales comme service public vital; les emplois de qualit\u00e9 pour les travailleurs des m\u00e9dias et de la culture.<\/p>\n<p>Plus particuli\u00e8rement, les politiques culturelles du Canada doivent toujours mettre l\u2019accent sur les emplois de qualit\u00e9 au sein d&#8217;industries cr\u00e9atives dynamiques. Un excellent rendement pour les travailleurs des m\u00e9dias, et nos coll\u00e8gues du domaine cr\u00e9atif de tous \u00e2ges, niveau d\u2019exp\u00e9rience, et origines est directement li\u00e9 \u00e0 de bonnes conditions de travail ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 la stabilit\u00e9 d\u2019emplois.<\/p>\n<p>Nous appr\u00e9cions en outre que la ministre ait r\u00e9it\u00e9r\u00e9 l\u2019engagement de son gouvernement \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard des recommandations de la Commission de v\u00e9rit\u00e9 et r\u00e9conciliation dans son annonce aujourd\u2019hui.
