Congrats to CBC’s 5th estate team for Scouts Honour– a compelling TV doc on sexual abuse in Scouting. It was a difficult story to research, (no one one wants to talk about it); difficult to shoot (when organizations won’t cooperate) and difficult to tell (when you can be sued over every word). The story won the Hillman Prize 2012. One of the judges called the story ” a triumph of investigative journalism, complex, detailed, international, expensive…it made Canada a safer place for children.” Producer Timothy Sawa thanked CBC for “supporting investigative journalism,” a sentiment echoed by many who shared concern that threatened funding cuts to the public broadcaster could stop this kind of reporting. And what a shame that would be!
