Carmel Smyth was presented with the CBC Branch President’s Award at a Guild meeting on June 1 for her contributions to the Guild.

Carmel was selected for the honour by her peers who emphasized her impact as “an asset to the union” who is fully deserving of any acknowledgement in that regard. They also noted Carmel has done a “great job recruiting and advocating on behalf of its members.”

Currently Carmel supports the CBC Branch Executive as its Vice-President. 

A long-time Guild activist, Carmel has served with excellence and integrity on many union committees including as National CMG President, Vice-President CBC Toronto LEC, President CBC Toronto LEC, Chair of Toronto CMG Grievance committee, Local Labour Joint Management Committee, Member of Toronto Diversity Committee, Diversity Co-Chair (with CBC) on Joint Diversity Events in Toronto, Chair Entertainment Committee CMG Lockout Toronto, Chair CMG Toronto Holiday Party committee, Chair One-Union Campaign leading a team of 4 in weekly mobilizing events.

“I can say with all certainty that this year’s winner meets the bar on many of the criteria for this award ,” said CBC/Radio-Canada Branch President Jonathan Spence in presenting the award at the 2019 CBC/Radio-Canada Branch President’s Council meeting.  Carmel said she was “surprised, grateful and getting teary over my colleagues giving me an award for exceptional service to co-workers and long years of union volunteering.”

The CBC Branch President’s Award is presented every two years during the biennial gathering of CBC location presidents from across the country. The winner is selected by a committee from among members nominated by their colleagues.
