Congratulations to Sadie Perley of the Neqotkuk (Tobique), New Brunswick, who has been selected as the winner of the 2025 CMG Indigenous Scholarship for Media Studies. In 2024-2025 she enrolled in the first year of the Bachelor of Journalism and Humanities Honours at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario.
In applying for the scholarship, Sadie wrote: “I am pursuing a degree in journalism because I believe we need more strong Indigenous voices in the media, and we need Indigenous perspectives to be represented. In my experience, growing up on reserve, you are raised around a lot of negativity, it may come from family, or other people in your community, which has become normalized, but it is especially difficult in media where the small amount of coverage of Indigenous people mainly talks about negative issues impacting us. […] Our youth deserve to know that they are not limited in what they can do in life. Our stories can push them to strive for more for themselves and that’s my main hope being a voice in media.”
The CMG Indigenous Scholarship for Media Studies is $10,000 renewable for up to four years as long as the recipient provides proof of successful completion of courses and enrolment into the next year. Once that recipient has completed their studies or four years has elapsed, then another recipient will be selected for the scholarship.
Thank you to everyone who applied this year, and our best wishes to all of you for continued success in your academic efforts.
