CBC/Radio-Canada Whitehorse LEC President Election – Candidate’s Profile: Caitrin Pilkington

While I’ve only been at CBC for one year, at previous jobs, I’ve often been driven to advocate for fellow employees who don’t know their rights or are being asked to do things they shouldn’t. This is my first time being part of an official union, and I’m incredibly grateful for the work that’s been done to put that in place and fight for our rights as workers. I’m all too aware of the things that can happen outside the protection of a union.

With a federal election on the way, this year has the potential to bring significant change for CBC employees. It will be important for our union president to continue to be a voice for workers on the ground to clearly communicate how far-away decisions are affecting us here in the North. But it’s equally important for union leadership to show up for meetings, do their research, follow the fine print and read between the lines to help prepare workers for what’s coming and provide as much clarity as possible during periods of uncertainty. As union president, I would look to strike a balance between advocacy and diligence.

My immediate goals would be:

– lobby for local management to create a wildfire plan that all Yukon staff feel comfortable with

– lobby for local management to create a plan to improve diversity at the Whitehorse office

– to assess the rate of burnout among staff through a survey (and depending on results, work with other local union staff and management to come up with common-sense strategies to address it)

Come chat or write me a message if you have any concerns or questions. I’m interested in learning more about what you need or would like to see from local union leadership.
