I haven’t been a representative of the union for long but have been with the CBC for eight years. I know what some of our most vulnerable employees, temporary – also known as precarious – workers, face on a daily basis.
Temporary workers make up about 25 per cent of CBC’s workforce in various regions – and face numerous challenges that can be destructive to those employees.
There are so many issues I can raise at this conference about what many temporary workers face — such as not knowing whether they’ll be working or in what position after two weeks.
Some spend many years as a temporary worker and many are looking for the stability that comes with full-time work.
I believe I can bring this perspective to The NewsGuild conference and share knowledge of what both temporary, part-time and full-time journalists, and other media workers, are facing during a difficult time for our profession in both Canada and the United States.
Journalists on both sides of the border face unprecedented difficulties and risks.
It’s important that we show our strength together.
