Hi, I’m Jane Robertson and I’m running to be your NEC president because I want to help our union members thrive in an inclusive and collaborative environment.
My goal in running for the National Executive Committee (NEC) is to focus on three main pillars: communication, education and collaboration. We need an overall communication strategy that is transparent and consistent. It needs to be open to quick pivots that advocate for media workers and reach people in ways that evolve for the changing media landscape. The role of education is to empower people with knowledge and confidence to better advocate for themselves. An informed workforce helps keep everyone protected and able to work together from a shared starting point.
I first picked up a video camera for CBC in 2006 and have been crafting visually-compelling stories across Canada ever since. I worked for CBC North: Iqaluit, NU, (2006 – 2010) CBC Alberta: Edmonton (2010 – 2017), and I now call CBC Prince Edward Island home. Over the years I have worked as a video journalist, associate producer, editor, video producer and a variety of back-fill positions. Many colleagues knew me by my former name and gender, but I transitioned in the spring of 2021 to fully embrace who I was all along.
I joined a Canadian Media Guild (CMG) Location Unit Executive Committee (LEC) in Iqaluit and have been volunteering time to our Union for more than 15 years. Currently I sit on the CBC Branch Executive Committee as the Atlantic Director. I have also been on the CBC/RC Branch Committee for Learning & Development. I was part of the CMG last bargaining team that came together to help get the 2024 – 2027 collective agreement signed. This summer I completed a 18-month certificate program through the Canadian Labour Congress, making new connections and building solidarity with folks in different unions across the country. My final project was on how unions could communicate better internally with members and externally with the public and employers which is something I believe our union could be better at.
The Canadian Media Guild is part of a larger labour movement. We can’t do it alone. That means developing working relations — not only in our shop floors — but across the country with different unions. These relationships take concerted efforts to develop and sustain which will pay off when we stand in solidarity to create positive change in the media industry.
I am also running as part of a slate as part of the CMG Workers United caucus, which is a grassroots group of members from across the country. I believe in building a collaborative and united CMG, one that educates and supports its members and is transparent in communications. We are better together.
Ultimately, I want to bring a new energy and dynamic to the role of the President of the NEC.
