The Canadian Media Guild is looking for at least three volunteers to take on the role of being our National Elections Committee. The committee is established under our bylaws and it oversees elections at the national and branch level.

The volunteers don’t take on this task alone. They’re provided with support in the national office, where the logistics of conducting our votes are handled.

We’re looking for members from at least two branches who have an interest in making sure our union elections are conducted fairly. The bylaws and existing election guidelines chart the way, and our experienced staff are there to co-ordinate voters lists and our online voting system.

We have National Executive Committee and Branch Executive Committee elections coming up this fall, but some of the key decisions have already been made, so you won’t be starting from scratch. Nominations for National and Branch positions will be called on Oct. 6. Voting for the contested positions will take place online Dec. 1-5.

We also expect to elect delegates in December to CWA|SCA-Canada’s National Representative Council and the NewsGuild-CWA convention.

After six years chairing the National Elections Committee, I’ve decided to move on and open the door for other CMG members to get involved in helping the union stay strong as a democratic organization. You don’t need to be an expert on rules and procedures to be an effective committee member, but one thing that will come in handy is a good dose of common sense.

Before moving on, I would like to thank fellow committee volunteer Harry Mesh for showing plenty of that characteristic in running our various votes over the past three years.
