CMG’s CBC/Radio-Canada Branch Updates Fall 2024

We hope you had a pleasant summer and found some time to enjoy the weather.  Congratulations to our members who worked on the Olympics & Paralympics, for uniting the country behind our athletes with such inspiring coverage!  You should have received payments in August for your individualized 2021 & 2022 pension surplus shares, as well as 2022 & 2023 additional 2% retroactive wage increases (if eligible).  You should also be receiving your unused TIL payout this month, now paid out at the current rate of pay.  And the 2023 Pension Surplus Sharing amounts should be distributed at some point in late spring 2025.  CMG’S CBC/Radio-Canada Branch elected officials have kept busy and we have several updates.

CBC/ Radio-Canada Now and Tomorrow

Unions offer different levels of protection for their members;  we protect our workplace rights, and sometimes we need to protect our workplace itself.  Many of us are at CBC/Radio-Canada because we believe in public broadcasting, and we know how important a role it plays in Canadian democracy. We work hard to provide Canadian stories without being the story ourselves, but when faced with an existential threat, as a union we need to protect this valuable Canadian institution.

That’s why the CBC/Radio-Canada Branch leadership has been busy making connections and alliances across the country, we have a plan in the works and will need your support in the coming weeks. Share your ideas and volunteer on a working group to protect CBC/Radio-Canada’s future (sign up here ). Or just let us know who our supporters are in your corner of the country so we can connect with them.  Watch for further announcements on a broader campaign coming soon.

Supporting Media Colleagues

CBC/Radio-Canada Branch members are part of a wider community of Canadian journalists, and we stand in solidarity with our union family during massive changes in our industry.  Members were dismayed by recent events that have seen private equity firms move to dissolve and sell the Saltwire family of news outlets, threatening the Atlantic media ecosystem.  More recently, fellow journalists at Bell Media and other smaller news companies have faced cuts and political attacks.  We stand firmly with our colleagues in calling for respect and a way forward to ensure Canada’s media landscape remains populated by professional journalists.

Streaming Channel Plans

As CBC News rolls out new workflows and protocols for FAST channels that are being introduced across the country, we want to hear from you about how it is impacting your newsroom. Send your thoughts to CBCFASTISSUES@cmg.ca to keep the union apprised.  We encourage you to also communicate your concerns directly with the local steering committee in your area.

CBC/Radio-Canada Branch Committee Vacancies

There are some upcoming vacancies on three of our national union committees; Workday Committee, News Issues Committee, and Transmission Health & Safety Committee.  Please fill in this form by November 4th if you are interested in serving on one of these. Due to the regional representation required on the Transmission H&S committee, we are looking for someone from Manitoba or Saskatchewan who works in the Transmission ranks to apply.

Upcoming CBC/Radio-Canada Branch Training

Virtual Stewards Training will be offered to those who want to become more involved in supporting their coworkers on the floor this November (watch for details on how to sign up).

In-person stewards training has been rolling out in Toronto, Vancouver & Newfoundland this fall.  The more of us trained to support one another, the stronger we are as a union.

Temp Know Your Rights virtual sessions will be held on October 21 @ Noon – 2pm EST, November 25 @ 3pm-5pm EST, and December 17 @ 7pm – 9pm EST.

BEC VISIT TO VANCOUVER

The CBC/Radio-Canada Branch Executive Committee visited Vancouver in early October, to meet members on the floor and hear about their concerns, and to share a slice of pizza.  CBC/Radio-Canada Branch Execs have visited locations in the Atlantic region, Ontario, BC, and across the North.  Please reach out if you would like us to come to your city.

In Solidarity,

CBC Branch Executive
