As union activists, we fight long and hard for decent pensions. We encourage companies and workers into each agreeing to pay a portion into a pension, so employees don’t end up in poverty. It seems a fair exchange for years of productive work. But in our hearts what  activists like me dream of, is for every Canadian to have a pension they can live on.

That is why unions continue pressing the federal government to ensure you, and everyone in your neighbourhood will retire with enough money to live, and their dignity intact.

Unions are so devoted to this  effort, that the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) has organized a lobby day on Parliament Hill today, Tuesday, December 3 to convince Ottawa to expand the federal pension programs CCP/QPP. Because we know – and politicians know – an increasing number of Canadians face a difficult financial future after retirement. And it doesn’t have to be that way.

The facts:

••Retirement security is one of the most pressing economic challenges facing millions of Canadians. 60% of workers do not have a company pension plan.

••While a pension crisis stares us in the face, we KNOW expanding the Canada Pension Plan/Quebec Pension Plan (CPP/QPP)– for everyone – is affordable.

••The CPP/QPP are proven to be safe, portable, predictable, inflation-protected benefits, and extremely cost effective.

••This is why pension experts, provincial governments, unions and seniors organizations ALL SUPPORT expanding the programs.
