As we remember the sacrifices made by fellow Canadians in past wars to protect our freedoms and chosen way of life, we at the Canadian Media Guild reserve a moment of thought and silence for the journalists, some of whom are our members, who covered and continue to cover armed conflicts. Many of the stories from the trenches that help us understand the sacrifices we remember on November 11 are the work of journalists.
This work also involves sacrifices that continue to this day. According to Reporters Without Borders, in 2023, a total of 54 media workers were killed around the world because of their journalistic activity. On November 5, that number was 47 for 2024. Let us remember them.
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression’s Journalists in Distress program provides humanitarian assistance to journalists around the world whose lives and well-being are threatened because of their work. This often happens when a war breaks out in their homeland. Since its creation in 1999, this CJFE program has disbursed over $300,000 and supported dozens of journalists in need. The CMG is proud to support this work and encourages you to do what you can as well.
