This message is being shared on behalf of the Toronto Metropolitan University research team conducting a national study on the experiences of Muslim journalists in Canadian newsrooms.
We would like to invite you to participate in a national research opportunity.
As part of a project funded by SSHRC and The Muslim Fund, our research team at Toronto Metropolitan University is conducting a mixed-methods study examining the experiences of Muslim journalists working in Canadian newsrooms. This research explores three key ideas:
- Newsroom culture and inclusion
- Editorial decision-making related to Muslim communities
- Access to leadership and advancement opportunities
The research includes an anonymous survey, with optional follow-up interviews and focus groups if participants wish to share additional perspectives.
We are currently recruiting participants who:
- Identify as Muslim and be at least 20 years of age
- Have worked in a Canadian newsroom in the last 25 years
- Are willing to complete a short online survey, and optionally, a Zoom interview or focus group (approx. 60 minutes)
The survey does not collect identifying information. However, we welcome participants to join the optional focus groups sessions and one-on-one interviews. These groups will be facilitated in groups of four to six individuals, alongside a member of the research team. Survey intake will begin March 2026 and will culminate in public dissemination through a dedicated website, journal articles and a symposium.
If you would like to participate, please find a link to the consent form and questionnaire in the message that was emailed directly to members.
If you would like to request additional information, we’d be happy to discuss the details further.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
All the best,
Primary Investigator: Asmaa Malik
Co-investigator: Fahad Ahmad
