On the National Day of Mourning — Tuesday, April 28, 2026 — the Canadian Media Guild (CMG) joins workers in honouring and remembering those who have lost their lives, been injured or made ill because of their work.
We continue to pay special tribute to media workers harmed or killed in war zones. We express our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those we have lost.
Reporting on violence, devastation and human suffering leaves lasting mental and emotional tolls. Workers experience PTSD, trauma, and long-term psychological impacts as a result of doing their jobs. Others face online harassment and threats due to the public nature of their work. We stand in solidarity with all who continue to live with both visible and invisible wounds resulting from their work. We also encourage anyone affected by tragedy to seek professional support.
The CMG represents more than 4,000 media workers across Canada in a wide variety of technical, administrative, digital, journalistic and broadcast roles. We urge employers, governments, and media organizations to take urgent, concrete action to prioritize workers’ physical, psychological, and emotional safety.
Every workplace— including newsrooms, field reporting environments, and digital spaces —should be safe, healthy, and respectful. In a time of increased misinformation and disinformation the contribution of media workers is vital to inform, connect, and strengthen democracy.
Together, we must continue to push for a media industry that is just, sustainable and safe for everyone.
