Training opportunities: Newsgathering in a hostile environment – $ 500 Training Grant – LinkedIn Learning

In line with our commitment to offer training opportunities for members, we want to highlight the following training options available to all CMG members:

Workshop – Newsgathering in a hostile environment

In light of the recent attacks against media workers in the United States, the NewsGuild-CWA is hosting a videoconference workshop on newsgathering in a hostile environment.

If you are a media worker involved in covering news, you are welcome to participate.  Please use the link we sent you via email.

The event starts at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday, January 16, and will last approximately 90 minutes.

Following the workshop, there will be a Q&A with journalists who have covered events in a dangerous environment, including those in Washington, D.C. last week.

Due to threats made against journalists, please don’t post the registration on social media – please share only through trusted networks.

$ 500 Training Grant

Every year, CMG’s parent union, CWA Canada, budgets money for education and mobilization so that union members can be provided with opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills, or to become more involved in the union.

In 2020, due to COVID-19, Locals such as CMG have not been able to provide in-person education, training or events.

To remedy this, the budget will be used to provide 50 members with up to $500 each to spend on an education or training course (university, community college, online, or the like).

Since only 50 grants are available, they will be approved on a first-come, first-served basis. All requests must be submitted by March 31, 2021.

To apply for the grant, email CWA Canada Office Co-ordinator, Marj Botsford.

Please provide your name, personal email address, a contact number, the name or number of your Local, the name of the course and institution, and a one-line description of the course.

Once approved, you can register for your course and you will just need to send in proof of payment to be reimbursed to a maximum of $500.

Instructions for members to access LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com)

CMG members are entitled to free registration for any of the thousands of online courses offered by LinkedIn Learning.

Please follow the instructions we sent you via email.

You will then receive in a few days an email giving you access to a LinkedIn Learning account. It is valid until the end of 2021 and can be renewed on a yearly basis.
