Union seeks organizing director

CWA/SCA Canada, the CMG’s Canadian parent union, has an exciting leadership opportunity for an experienced union organizer.

We are inviting applications from candidates who have been in the trenches and can also develop a successful and complete organizing program. This is a high-energy and demanding job which requires determination, creativity and flexibility.

The program will be implemented by CWA/SCA Canada working with its largest local, the Canadian Media Guild, which has about 6,000 members at the CBC, The Canadian Press and other media outlets across the country.
The ideal candidate will be committed to growing our union among workers in traditional jobs and those in new types of employment relationships. He/she will work with all parts of Canada’s increasingly diverse population and will have the ability to lead, administer, and mentor.

The Organizing Director will be responsible for the overall program and individual organizing campaigns and will report to the Director of CWA/SCA Canada. He/she will also be charged with preparing budgets, educating and training member volunteers and, when necessary, directing staff.

Located in Toronto, the successful candidate must be available for frequent travel. Initially, this management position will be offered as a three-year contract. Annual salary is $80,000-$90,000 plus competitive benefits.

Applicants should possess the following:
* Strong understanding of best practices in union organizing
* At least 5 years’ experience of successful organizing
* Well-developed written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to consult, and discuss and negotiate with a diverse range of people
* Ability to lead and manage within a team environment
* Proficient use of internet and social media
* Spoken French an asset
