You are invited to an event CMG’s parent union, CWA Canada, is organizing for precarious, emerging and student media workers on Wednesday, April 29th in Toronto. This will be a great opportunity to chat with other media workers over a drink, to check out some great labour reporting pieces, and to discuss how media workers can navigate the world of work. This event is open to all, so please feel free to share this email with friends and colleagues.
This event is the launch of the Media Works project, which aims to inform media workers of their rights and to improve labour reporting.
As part of the project, CWA Canada created a handbook for media workers, and commissioned 14 labour reporting pieces. You can pick up your copy of the Media Works handbook at the event.
There will be a roundtable discussion moderated by Sharmeen Khan with a few of the contributors to the project:
Haseena Manek, one of the co-writers of the handbook, on why we created a guide to labour reporting and media worker rights, and how it will be useful to all types of media workers.
Maggie Reid, a Ryerson University student, on the barriers to accessing careers in journalism and the role of community media in training journalists.
Arman Aghbali, a contributor to campus radio station The Scope, on labour issues in the world of Canadian IT startups.
Sara Tatelman, a freelance journalist, on her exploration of the role and responsibility of journalism schools in promoting internships.
Snacks, drinks and tickets are free – RSVP here.
