Brief update
Until a collective agreement is negotiated Corus is not allowed by law to change the terms or condition of employment of any bargaining unit employee without CMG’s consent. CMG has reminded Corus of this. CMG has not agreed to disagree about this.
We have also been clear with management that if Corus finds that it is having any operational problems arising from this temporary “freeze” of conditions, CMG will be ready to discuss these and will try to work out sensible solutions with the company.
Corus has said that they think it will be odd to have bargaining unit employees continue under two different sets of benefit plans over the next few months until a collective agreement is negotiated. CMG does not see the difficulty with this but has told Corus that we will listen to their concerns and discuss this with them.
We have emphasized to Corus our hope for open and constructive dialogue, and asked the company to start by providing us with a complete list and description of any immediate changes they would like and the operational need for those changes.
We have also reminded Corus that they are not allowed by law to directly impose these changes on their employees and must negotiate them with the Guild.
We will keep you updated and discuss all of this with you on Monday (see below).
