The CMG 2025 biennial convention will be held in Toronto from May 27 to 28 at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Toronto International Airport Terminal 3. It will be preceded by the CBC Branch Convention on May 26th and followed by a CMG training day on May 29th at the same location.
Every two years, about 150 Canadian Media Guild (CMG) members from across the country gather to review CMG priorities, see what we can do better, and set our union’s direction for the next two years.
The Canadian Media Guild has 5,000 members across the country, in more than a dozen media companies. Members selected as delegates from APTN, AFP, BuzzFeed, Canada’s National Observer, The Canadian Press/PMNA, CBC/Radio-Canada, CKOF-CJRC, Islington Printing, Thomson Reuters, TFO, TVO, Vice Media and ZoomerMedia, will have a chance to meet each other and help plan the union’s future priorities.
The theme of our 2025 CMG Convention, “Our Media, Our Voice,” reflects how our work as media workers represents the voice and interests of Canadians. This theme reminds us of the critical role we must continue to play in delivering quality news and reliable information to the public.
Here is key information for CMG members as we prepare for our convention:
Delegates to the CMG convention
Automatic delegates
Members of Branch executives and Location Unit presidents are all automatic delegates to the convention, along with the CMG National Executive Committee members. Other interested CMG members who would like to attend as delegates can put their name forward in their Location Units, or in their Branches where there are no Location Units.
Additional delegates
The number of additional delegates for each Branch or Location Unit is determined by a formula based on membership. The additional delegate allocations for the 2025 Convention are available here.
To be a candidate in the delegate elections, please submit your name to your Location Unit or, if you don’t have a Location Unit, to your Branch executives by Wednesday, February 26 at 5 p.m. EST.
To find your Location Unit or Branch executive contact information, go to www.cmg.ca (Contacts).
Each Location Unit or Branch may also use their Location or Branch budget to send additional non-voting delegates (observers). Check with a member of the CMG executive at your workplace if you would like to attend as an observer.
The union will pay for the workdays that delegates are released to attend the convention, provide hotel, travel, and some meals, and reimburse other expenses as per our bylaws and policies. Delegates will receive instructions on completing travel and release forms once the selection process has been completed.
Proposing resolutions for the CMG Convention
Any CMG member in good standing who wishes to do so is invited to put forward a resolution (a formal statement of opinion, or a statement to direct an action to be taken by the CMG), or an amendment to the CMG Bylaw to be reviewed by the delegates to the CMG Convention on May 27-28.
Any CMG Member of the CBC Branch may submit a resolution for the CBC Branch Executive or an amendment to the CBC Branch bylaws to be reviewed by the CBC Branch Convention delegates on May 26.
