Spring CBC/Radio-Canada Union Updates

Please note: This communication is published on behalf of the CBC/Radio-Canada branch by the CMG head office, and its contents are the sole responsibility of the CBC/Radio-Canada branch.

1.5% Wage Increase – You should now see an increased hourly wage on your most recent paycheque.  CMG reserved the right to negotiate for more once CBC/Radio-Canada reveals the 2025 Treasury Board Allocations.

Sick Notes After Five Days – All the unions at CBC/Radio-Canada pushed for a more reasonable length of time before a doctor’s note is required by our employer.  We welcome the news that now we are not required to provide documentation until after five consecutive sick days.  Members are reminded that they are not required to provide their diagnosis in any documentation given to our employer.

TOIL can be used before AL – Some members have been told that they must exhaust all Annual Leave before they can use their Time Off In Lieu, but we have clarified with management that is not a requirement.  Remember that CMG staff can exercise seniority rights with one set of their AL request dates for each of the April 1 and September 30 deadlines, and that AL requests have priority over TOIL.  If you are told that you must use all AL before TOIL then please contact your local CMG staff rep.

Committee Vacancies – We have some vacancies on some of our CBC/Radio-Canada national union committees that could use your talent.  Please fill in this form by Friday, May 9, 2025, to let us know if you are interested in serving on one of these committees.

National Joint Committee on Learning and Development: Where we discuss members’ training and development needs with management. Ongoing and equal access to training is necessary to prepare members for workplace change and challenges.

Branch By-law and Policy Committee:  The CMG at CBC/Radio-Canada committee responsible for the review and upkeep of CBC/Radio-Canada Branch bylaws and policies, to ensuring compliance with CMG and CWA-SCA Canada bylaws and constitutions.

News Issues Committee:  Issues particular to news staff are discussed with management in a forum that can address general newsroom concerns.

Consultative Committee on Staff Benefits:  Joint committee with all CBC/Radio-Canada unions, Pensioners & unaffiliated/ management representatives, which oversees our benefit and pension plans.

Temp Onboarding –  We encourage our temporary workers to sign up for Temp Onboarding sessions offered by the CBC/Radio-Canada Temp Project.  Even if you have been here for a year or two, you may still learn something.  Watch for CMG’s Temp Know Your Rights sessions to be offered again soon too.

Safety in the Field – Recent events at the Leaders’ Debate has shown a need for increased security, even in places that have normally been safe places.  The CMG is pushing for enhanced protection for our members still on the campaign trail, so they can do their jobs safely and provide professional media coverage to Canadians.

In Defence of CBC/Radio-Canada – The CBC/Radio-Canada Branch Executive Council is glad to see the tide turning in public opinion on CBC/Radio-Canada during this federal election campaign.  Recent polls have shown more than 3/4 of Canadians support the public broadcaster, and we are now seeing improved mandate and funding models become party platforms.

It’s heartening to see that there have been numerous campaigns in support of the CBC/ Radio-Canada during this federal election, including one backed by the CMG.     Research papers have been written by establishments such as the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives that underline the importance of the public broadcaster.  And Canadians in every corner of this country have been engaging in positive discussions on CBC/Radio-Canada ( Friends.ca FUND THE CBC Campaign,  www.reddit.com/r/SaveTheCBC,  savethecbc2025.ca,  forwardcanada.ca).  The CBC/Radio-Canada Pensioners Association has also launched a campaign this election,  promoting a strong CBC/Radio-Canada.

We know the work we do matters to Canadians… whether it be covering forest fires, or as the only media covering municipal affairs in smaller centres, or offering free Canadian sports and entertainment to all Canadians.  CBC/Radio-Canada tells stories in both official languages, as well as over 50 programs in Indigenous languages.  We represent the diversity of Canada within our union ranks as well as to the country, ensuring a spectrum of perspectives are heard as we create and capture the history of our great nation as it unfolds.

Although those of us working under the JSP must use caution, the BEC believes you have the right to be an active citizen.  Please ensure you consider how various party platforms reflect support for CBC/Radio-Canada when voting in this federal election.

In Solidarity,

CBC/Radio-Canada Branch Executive Council
